AdventHealth Wesley Chapel launches advanced stroke intervention suite

The suite is specifically equipped for minimally invasive procedures, most notably mechanical thrombectomy. By restoring blood flow to the brain rapidly, physicians can mitigate long-term disability for patients suffering from severe ischemic strokes. Medical director of neurology Dr. Jason Maljaars emphasized the urgency of the intervention, noting that brain cells begin to perish within minutes of a blockage. Providing this high-acuity care locally reduces the need for patient transfers, keeping individuals closer to their families during recovery.

Beyond stroke care, the suite expands the hospital's capabilities to include coil embolization for brain aneurysms and diagnostic cerebral angiograms. This investment marks a significant step in the hospital’s goal to achieve Comprehensive Stroke Center designation. With more than 80,000 stroke-related hospitalizations recorded in Florida during 2023, the technology addresses a critical health need in Pasco County, reinforcing the institution's growing neuroscience program.
