Saint Joseph’s University Centers Human Judgment in AI Strategy

Saint Joseph's University President Cheryl A. McConnell has unveiled a multi-year institutional priority titled the Initiative for Human Formation in an Age of AI. The strategy shifts the focus from purely technical integration to cultivating human judgment, ethical reasoning, and critical thinking across the entire Philadelphia campus.

The initiative rests on three pillars: faculty innovation, student development of emotional intelligence, and institutional capacity building. Rather than treating AI as a peripheral tool, the university plans to weave it into the core of its liberal arts tradition. Central to this effort is the new AI Innovation Studio, a collaborative hub designed for students, faculty, and community partners to experiment with practical solutions that prioritize human values over automated efficiency.

To bridge the gap between academic theory and industry reality, the university is launching the Horizon Series. This program brings together government, business, and academic leaders to debate the ethical implications of emerging tools on the workforce. Practical implementation is already underway, supported by a multi-million dollar investment from the Sanchez Dooner Foundation. This funding enables faculty grants, the development of student experience navigators, and a rigorous framework to measure how core human competencies evolve alongside technological proficiency. Provost Jean McGivney-Burelle noted that the institution aims to ensure technology serves the mission of the university, positioning human-centric education as a distinct advantage in an automated landscape.
