Rollins characterized the current federal mandate as overly restrictive, framing the rollback as a strategy to enhance forest management and mitigate wildfire risks. The administration’s pivot aligns with a March executive order from Donald Trump that explicitly directed federal agencies to prioritize increased timber production on public lands.
Environmental advocates immediately challenged the administration’s logic, warning that the proposal would likely exacerbate the very fire risks it claims to address. Drew Caputo, vice president of litigation at Earthjustice, noted that fire ignitions are significantly more frequent in areas with road access and confirmed the organization is preparing for legal action to block the policy change. Other groups, including the Sierra Club and the Natural Resources Defense Council, condemned the decision as a corporate giveaway that sacrifices mature, old-growth ecosystems for industry profit.
