Strategy Bitcoin Treasury Flirts with Profitability After Price Rally

Bitcoin’s recent 8.5% daily surge pushed the asset above Strategy’s $75,385 average acquisition price on August 21, briefly moving the firm’s massive treasury into the black. With 840,447 BTC held, the company saw its unrealized gains jump to approximately $192 million before subsequent market fluctuations narrowed the surplus.

The company’s position remains highly sensitive to price volatility. Given the scale of its holdings, every $1,000 shift in Bitcoin’s market value alters the portfolio’s valuation by roughly $840 million. While this brief return to profit highlights the potential of the strategy, realized gains remain elusive unless the company chooses to divest or leverage the assets in financing transactions. Strategy has spent recent months navigating liquidity needs, including selling 1,690 BTC in early August to fund preferred share repurchases.

Contrasting this, BitMine Immersion Technologies faces a more challenging landscape with its Ethereum holdings. With an estimated average acquisition cost of $3,366 per token, the company’s treasury remains significantly underwater at current trading levels near $2,371. Although BitMine continues to generate revenue through its validator network—staking over 5 million of its 5.8 million ETH—the firm would require a 42% price recovery to reach break-even status based on current cost estimates.
