Blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain reported that Japanese firm Metaplanet transferred 1,000 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $79.77 million, to Coinbase Prime on August 25. While the movement prompted immediate market speculation regarding a potential sell-off, the transaction remains unconfirmed as a divestment by either the company or the exchange.
The transfer of 1,000 BTC represents the latest in a series of significant movements involving Metaplanet’s treasury, which currently holds 43,000 Bitcoin. Because Coinbase Prime functions as an institutional custody platform, assets moved to its wallets are frequently held for collateral, internal management, or safekeeping rather than liquidation.
Metaplanet has previously navigated similar market speculation. On August 12, CEO Simon Gerovich clarified that a movement of 5,014 BTC was merely an internal shift between custodial addresses, leaving the company’s total holdings untouched. The firm’s current position was built through aggressive acquisitions, with an average purchase price of roughly $96,191 per coin, bringing the total market value of its holdings to approximately $3.48 billion.
This latest transfer occurs against the backdrop of Metaplanet’s pending deal with Nasdaq-listed Super League Enterprise. The two firms are working to launch a U.S. Bitcoin treasury platform to be rebranded as Superplanet, a move requiring 2,100 BTC in capital from Metaplanet. Although the timing of the Coinbase deposit aligns with ongoing treasury activities, no official disclosure has linked the 1,000 BTC to the Super League transaction. Until Metaplanet releases a formal update regarding its balance sheet, the movement remains a custodial shift rather than a confirmed sale.
