Kraken locks accounts following 12,000 unsolicited HTX-linked transfers

Between August 17 and 24, Kraken restricted customer accounts after receiving nearly 12,000 tiny cryptocurrency transfers tied to the sanctioned exchange HTX. The exchange characterized the incident as a compliance-poisoning attack, designed to force regulatory scrutiny onto unsuspecting users by flooding their digital wallets with restricted assets.

Kraken restored access to the impacted accounts after conducting internal reviews, though it continues to isolate the disputed funds. The exchange remains unable to confirm the identity of the sender, despite blockchain data linking the origin wallet to the HTX ecosystem. While Arkham Intelligence identified the source as HTX-linked, the exchange denies any involvement and is investigating the possibility of malicious third-party activity or labeling errors.

This incident highlights a growing challenge for centralized exchanges: the inability to prevent unwanted transactions on public ledgers. Unlike traditional dust attacks intended to track wallet owners, this maneuver seeks to trigger automated compliance alarms by associating innocent users with assets sanctioned by the U.K. and EU. With EU transaction bans against Huobi Global officially active as of August 23, such transfers carry significant regulatory weight. Kraken currently holds the assets in escrow, awaiting further clarity, while HTX maintains that its own internal security protocols were not breached.
