Ampera Partners with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on Nuclear Fuel
Ampera has entered a strategic partnership with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to scale the production of advanced Tri-Structural Isotropic (TRISO) fuel. By leveraging liquid-metal-jetting technology, the collaboration aims to secure a domestic supply chain for thorium-based fuel designed to power the next generation of compact, subcritical nuclear reactors.

The project focuses on optimizing the manufacturing of highly uniform, spherical thorium-232 kernels. Researchers will utilize droplet-based liquid-metal-jetting to refine particle production, drawing on previous prototypes developed by the laboratory. The scope of the work spans computational modeling, high-temperature process development, and rigorous material testing to ensure the scalability of the fuel production process.
Dr. Viktor Sukhotskiy, a principal investigator at the laboratory, noted that the initiative serves the dual purpose of solving complex nuclear fuel challenges while maturing liquid metal jetting as a manufacturing method. For Ampera, the collaboration is a critical step in vertically integrating its fuel supply. CEO Brian Matthews stated that developing this domestic capability is foundational to reducing cost and supply-chain risks for the company’s subcritical energy platforms.
Ampera’s proprietary technology portfolio, which includes over 60 patents, centers on compact reactors capable of operating for up to 30 years without refueling. These subcritical systems rely on an external neutron source for operation, a design intended for industrial, defense, and maritime applications. This partnership follows Ampera's recent demonstration of a 3D-printed silicon carbide core module, reinforcing the company's focus on factory-built, modular nuclear infrastructure.
