Changpeng Zhao Outlines Future for Tokenized Assets in Hong Kong

Hong Kong stands as a primary candidate to bridge traditional finance with the Web3 ecosystem, according to Binance founder Changpeng Zhao. Speaking at an August 27 event in the city’s Exchange Square, Zhao identified real-world asset tokenization and decentralized exchange growth as the next major frontiers for the digital economy.

Zhao emphasized that Hong Kong’s robust financial infrastructure and deep talent pool create a unique environment for institutional adoption of blockchain technology. He pointed specifically to tokenized securities as a transformative development, noting that such instruments could eventually bypass the limitations of traditional market hours and restricted national account systems. His analysis positions the city as a strategic hub, distinct from mainland China’s more restrictive regulatory posture.

Local authorities have already begun translating this vision into practice. The Securities and Futures Commission reported 13 authorized tokenized products by March 2026, while the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Project Ensemble is currently testing real-value transactions involving tokenized deposits and bonds. These initiatives align with Zhao’s outlook on real-world assets, which he categorized to include stablecoins linked to fiat currencies.

Beyond asset tokenization, Zhao signaled potential for a resurgence in decentralized exchanges. He suggested that if U.S. regulatory scrutiny continues to moderate, the improved infrastructure of platforms like Hyperliquid could drive significant market expansion. While acknowledging that decentralized services remain subject to complex anti-money-laundering and securities requirements, he noted that the current shift in policy creates a more permissive climate for innovation. These observations reflect his personal projections on industry trends rather than specific new expansion plans for Binance.
