Morgan Stanley Postpones Tokenized Stock Trading to 2027

Morgan Stanley has pushed the launch of its tokenized equity trading service to the first quarter of 2027, signaling a departure from its original late 2026 target. The delay highlights the complex infrastructure requirements and the need for deeper institutional demand before blockchain-based securities can gain significant traction.

Morgan Stanley Postpones Tokenized Stock Trading to 2027

Amy Oldenburg, head of digital asset strategy at the bank, confirmed the revised timeline during the TOKEN2049 conference in Singapore. The shift reflects a strategic decision to align the bank's internal progress with the broader development of the tokenization ecosystem. While the firm continues to build proprietary wallet infrastructure and test applications through its Digital Asset Lab, the primary bottleneck remains a lack of available financial products suitable for its Trajectory Cross alternative trading system.

Despite the delay, the institution maintains a bullish long-term outlook on the sector, with Oldenburg projecting that tokenized real-world assets could command a market value between $3 trillion and $10 trillion by 2030. The bank is currently monitoring industry-wide milestones, including the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation’s (DTCC) October 2026 service rollout and evolving regulatory frameworks from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. For now, the bank’s focus remains on refining the technical foundation required to manage capital on-chain, though no specific list of eligible securities or final launch dates have been finalized.
