Hindu Youth Network Launches Advocacy Training to Combat Bias

Young Hindu advocates gathered in Piscataway, New Jersey, on October 10 for the inaugural National Hindu Youth Conference. Hosted by the CoHNA Youth Action Network, the event moved beyond awareness-building, equipping attendees with practical strategies to address religious misrepresentation, campus bias, and the nuances of public policy engagement.

The conference focused on transforming identity into active civic participation. U.S. Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, appearing virtually, challenged participants to embrace their heritage rather than downplay it, citing his own experiences facing pressure to sanitize his background during his entry into politics. Keynote speaker Shawn Binda reinforced this by urging attendees to build advocacy on a foundation of personal connection to Dharma rather than reactive opposition to external criticism.

Practical sessions bridged the gap between theory and action. Analyst Prasiddha Sudhakar emphasized the necessity of documenting discrimination, noting that effective advocacy requires clearly naming biases. Meanwhile, student-led workshops at Rutgers University examined real-world scenarios, such as addressing problematic textbook portrayals of Hinduism and navigating mislabeling in dining services. By connecting institutional research methods with local community experience, the event provided a roadmap for students to challenge rhetoric in academic and professional settings.
