Canada P2P crypto volume tracks decline in international students
Peer-to-peer cryptocurrency transactions in Canada have retreated from a spring 2024 peak of 650,000, mirroring a sharp contraction in the country’s international student population. Data from Chainalysis indicates a consistent correlation between study permit trends and domestic crypto activity among migrants from India, China, and the Philippines.

While Chainalysis defines the relationship as associational rather than causal, the trend line suggests that immigrants frequently utilized P2P channels to manage cross-border financial ties. Government figures from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada reveal the scale of the demographic shift: new student arrivals between January and August 2026 plummeted 71% compared to the same period in 2024. By August 2026, the total number of study permit holders had dropped to 602,115, a 41.7% decrease from the 1.03 million recorded in June 2024.
The decline in crypto-based remittance activity coincides with broader efforts to modernize international money transfers. Although stablecoins often offer lower costs—with firms like Borderless.xyz citing median transfer fees near 1%—the final leg of the transaction remains complex. Mārtiņš Beņķītis, CEO of Gravity Team, noted that blockchain settlement is only one component of the process. Effective cross-border payments still require local currency conversion and payout mechanisms, which are constrained by regional banking hours, liquidity, and compliance hurdles.
Financial institutions are now attempting to bridge these gaps. In the Philippines, the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has piloted a stablecoin-based system to process inbound overseas earnings. By partnering with the digital clearinghouse Meridian, the bank aims to expedite the conversion of international funds into Philippine pesos. CEO Jose Teodoro Limcaoco stated that the initiative prioritizes faster access to earnings while maintaining regulatory standards, marking a shift toward institutionalizing stablecoin rails for personal remittances.
