Gilbane Joins Global Push to Clean Up the Concrete Supply Chain

Sand and silicates underpin nearly every modern structure, yet the global supply chain for these resources remains notoriously opaque. Gilbane Building Company has stepped in as a founding member of the Coalition for Responsible Sand and Silicates to overhaul how these essential construction materials are sourced and tracked.

Gilbane Joins Global Push to Clean Up the Concrete Supply Chain

The construction industry faces a mounting challenge: demand for sand and silicates continues to climb, while sourcing practices remain fragmented and difficult to verify. By joining the coalition, Gilbane aims to integrate clearer standards and digital traceability into project delivery. This move addresses the growing pressure from investors and regulators to account for Scope 3 emissions and material-related risks that have historically been sidelined.

Veronique Bourgier, Gilbane’s Chief Growth and Strategy Officer, identified material sourcing as a critical factor in long-term project resilience. The coalition intends to bridge the gap between abstract sustainability goals and site-level execution. For project teams, this means moving toward smarter procurement options where responsible sourcing functions as a baseline requirement rather than an optional add-on. Executive Sustainability Officer Tabitha Scott noted that while sand is one of the highest-volume materials in the built environment, it currently lacks the transparency needed for modern, ethical construction. Through this partnership, Gilbane plans to refine its own procurement standards and digital tracking tools to ensure consistency for partners and clients across its global portfolio.
