Professor Ge’s academic career spans decades, marked by a departure from conventional Western disciplinary boundaries. His foundational work, An Intellectual History of China, challenged scholars to look toward the margins and the everyday rather than focusing exclusively on the classics. This approach bridged the gaps between social, cultural, and intellectual history, providing a new framework for understanding the development of Chinese thought.

Ge Zhaoguang Awarded 2026 Tang Prize in Sinology
Ge Zhaoguang, a distinguished professor at Fudan University, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Tang Prize in Sinology. The committee recognized his transformative work in reframing Chinese intellectual history, noting his ability to move beyond traditional elite-centered narratives to explore the lived mental worlds of common people.

In recent years, he has focused on the historical discourses surrounding the identity of China itself. His trilogy of studies, including What is China? and Reconstructing Historical Discourses of China for Our Time, incorporates Sinitic records from neighboring states like Vietnam and Joseon. By examining China through the perspective of its borders and diplomatic neighbors, he has fundamentally altered how international academia interprets the relationship between historical and contemporary China. Beyond his research, Ge founded the National Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Fudan University to foster interdisciplinary exchange, with his findings now translated into multiple languages including French, German, and Japanese.
