BNB Chain Readies Pasteur Upgrade to Bolster Security and Throughput

The BNB Smart Chain is set to undergo the Pasteur hard fork on August 25, a technical overhaul designed to refine cross-chain security protocols and nearly double transaction capacity. The update arrives as the network looks to eliminate lingering vulnerabilities in validator permissions and governance procedures.

BNB Chain Readies Pasteur Upgrade to Bolster Security and Throughput

Starting at 2:30 a.m. UTC, the network will implement three core proposals—BEP-682, BEP-695, and BEP-675—to fortify its infrastructure. Node operators are required to migrate to software version v1.7.7 ahead of the transition and must purge an obsolete configuration setting, EnableBAL, to ensure system compatibility. While the upgrade does not alter the current block time of 450 milliseconds, it significantly optimizes how validators verify data.

BEP-682 introduces stricter validation checks for cross-chain transfers to prevent the exploitation of repeated validator entries, a common weakness in bridge security. Simultaneously, BEP-695 ensures that validator management rights are revoked immediately upon a key change, preventing potential bad actors from maintaining influence after losing their credentials. Governance integrity is also bolstered by blocking blacklisted addresses from submitting votes via off-chain signed messages.

Performance gains stem from BEP-675, which streamlines the block-building process. By allowing validators to perform initial checks on pre-processed blocks, the network reduced validator verification time from 125 milliseconds to 15 milliseconds in controlled tests. These efficiency gains pushed transaction capacity from 1,237 to 2,324 transactions per second. Although these figures highlight potential scalability, the network noted that the new block-building method will be phased in gradually as infrastructure providers adapt their systems.
